My Review of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine”
Earlier this year, I posed the question: could Deadpool and Wolverine save the MCU? After seeing the film I think the answer is… yes! I thoroughly enjoyed this film and the action was so engaging. In a weird way I believe that the two characters had some sort of growth in the third film. Wade Wilson (Deadpool) was surrounded by people he loved and he showed his heart by caring about him back. He is known to break the fourth wall and engage with the audience, a defining characteristic. However, he seems to have gained self-awareness about his actions in this film. This could be because he has fallen into a low point where the way he thinks about his life has become more insightful. His willingness to sacrifice to save the ones that he loved shows some growth.
Logan (Wolverine) has also grown since I last saw him. Logan (2027) had such a sad and well-rounded ending that it made his presence in this film nostalgic. It was a bittersweet nostalgia, however, since the Wolverine in the film was not the one I, as a viewer left off with (blame that on the multiverse plot). While his hard-knock demeanor stayed the same, he embraced more humor in the film. That was the thing I feel like myself and other MCU fans enjoyed. The blend of humor and seriousness in Logan’s character was perfect. It showcased a lighter side that was not showcased in the previous film he had appeared in.
The main theme I found to be present in this film is friendship. The film explores the unlikely bond that the two share. Yet, they supported each other even if they wanted to kill each other deep down. Redemption and second chances were another theme I found to be present. They both made mistakes in the past. Which essentially leads them to fix those mistakes and redeem themselves. Wade and Logan overcame that in unlikely circumstances.
One of the main things I can respect from this film is the marketing and chemistry between the two main characters. Whether or not you are an MCU fan, everyone knew that this film was coming out due to the bold marketing. Reynolds and Jackman pulled out all the stops to let the world know that they were back together. They appeared on talk shows together, and Youtube videos, and even got brand deals. I think that their chemistry is a testament of the main theme of the film. And let’s not forget the icon- ness of the three cameos. Elektra, Blade, and Gambit had my heart pumping and I even got chills during that walk-out scene.
The success of the film makes me hopeful that its influences would spread throughout the MCU and add water to the ‘drought’. Shaw Levy did an amazing job at directing this film and bringing it to its highest potential. The R-rating was in full effect of this film, but, I didn’t mind. It was fun, action-thrilled, and funny.
My Rating for ‘Deadpool and Wolverine”
I would rate this film 85%
